So this story is a little different than most you've heard. My name is Melissa and I can read people's thoughts. I can prove it. I know what you are thinking right now. You are thinking I'm full of crap. Okay, sure that was an easy one, but for real, it's something I've been able to do for a while now. I know it sounds completely crazy but it's real and it's kind of ruining my life. Let me tell you how it all started.
A few years ago I was in a car accident. I really don’t remember much about what happened. I was 13 and I was riding with my older sister to get some food. It was raining, she was texting her stupid boyfriend, it was a bad combination. She lost control of the car on the wet pavement. We slid off the road and the car flipped four times and rolled down a steep hill. She got a broken arm and I guess I got worse. What I do remember is waking up in the hospital about two weeks later. Of course, I had no idea that much time had passed. I had no clue what was going on. I was in a coma for two weeks.
I woke up and there was a doctor standing by my bad talking to a nurse. He was telling her that I was lucky to be alive. Then I heard the nurse say “Lucky? This kid’s going to be a vegetable for the rest of her life.” I sat up and said “What?” and they both jumped like they had seen a ghost. They started checking my vitals and looking at a bunch of machines, and then they called in more people. Next thing I knew there were about 20 people in the room. There was so much going on. It seemed so loud in that room. I couldn’t understand why it was so loud, because I couldn’t see very many people’s lips moving but it sounded like a crowded cafeteria. It didn’t make sense to me. They said I might have some pressure and swelling that could be affecting my hearing and it should get better in a few days.
I had to stay at the hospital for several days before they could let me go home. After I was discharged, things started to go back to normal in some ways and got weirder in others. Things got quieter for the most part, but I was still hearing things I shouldn’t be hearing. I quickly started to realize that I was hearing people’s thoughts. I know, you think I’m crazy, and really so did I at first. I thought “great, I got some kind of brain injury and now I’m a total schizo. Just what I needed.” I figured out, though, that I wasn’t crazy.
First, I started hearing my mom’s thoughts. She was thinking about how scared she was after the crash. I could hear the thoughts of everyone in my family, and then when I went back to school, it was the same. There was this one guy, in particular, named Ryan, who caught my attention because he thought about me a lot. It wasn’t disgusting teenage guy stuff either. I felt like I got to know him through his thoughts. He was so sweet and he really liked me. Skip ahead a couple of years and we are dating and kind of in love, but then something else popped up.
To tell the rest of the story, I need to tell you about my really good friend Maggie. She has been my BFF for about a year and a half. She is really awesome. She is really cute in a down-to-earth kind of way. She doesn’t wear makeup, she has longish brown hair and a good body but doesn’t show it off for attention like other girls in school. So one day me and my boyfriend are walking through the hall when Maggie drops something and bends over to pick it up. Ryan pretends to not look at her bending over but he can’t hide his thoughts from me and I hear “Damn! Thank God for yoga pants.” He looked really surprised when I hit him in the arm.
I was mad at first, but then I remembered that that’s how men’s minds work and it doesn’t mean he doesn’t love me just because he looks at someone else. But then, as time went on I noticed that he was thinking about her a lot, like all the time. Even when she wasn’t there, he was thinking about her. He was even thinking about her when me and him were...well when we were together. I couldn’t believe it. My boyfriend was becoming obsessed with my best friend. I got so mad about it that I started to think maybe I should just leave him and let the two of them be together. Well, that was until I heard something else. Me and Maggie were walking down the hall one day and Amber, the popular girl that all the guys wanted was walking in front of us. Maggie was staring straight ahead and I heard her think “Damn Amber! Thank God for yoga pants!”
So now, because I’ve been cursed with this ability or whatever you want to call it, I know that my Boyfriend wants my BFF, and she wants other girls. So, I guess the good news is, I don’t have to worry about Maggie sleeping with Ryan, but I don’t know if I want to be with him anyway if he’s going to spend all his time thinking about someone else. And the worst part, I can’t talk to either one of them about any of this, because if I tell them the truth, they will either think I’m crazy or they’ll be scared to be around me.
What should I do?
